Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to install or configure a local ComfyUI environment through Nix, especially as part of a declarative NixOS or nix-darwin setup.
Who it is for
- Nix users who want a managed local ComfyUI environment.
- NixOS and nix-darwin users adding ComfyUI to a system configuration.
- Linux users selecting a ComfyUI package for NVIDIA CUDA, AMD ROCm or Intel XPU hardware.
Documented uses
- Launch ComfyUI through a Nix flake rather than manually managing its Python environment.
- Add ComfyUI and a selected hardware package to a Nix system configuration.
- Pass supported ComfyUI command-line options, such as a custom port or data directory.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and the project is licensed under MIT. Nix is required for the documented flake commands and configuration examples.
- The flake uses Python 3.12 and includes curated custom nodes.
- The CUDA package requires NVIDIA driver 580 or newer and targets Turing through Blackwell GPUs.
- The README reports ROCm validation so far only on gfx1100.
- Intel XPU packages are offered for Linux x86_64, but maintainers say they have not tested them on real Intel hardware.
- ComfyUI CLI options are supported; the README lists options for ports, data directories, network listening and VRAM use.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Run ComfyUI with the Nix flake
Launch the default ComfyUI package on supported macOS Apple Silicon or Linux systems.
Before you start
- Nix is available on the host.
- The host is macOS on Apple Silicon or Linux.
Steps
Run
nix run github:utensils/comfyui-nix -- --open.Use the browser that opens when ComfyUI is ready.
Expected outcome
ComfyUI is launched and the browser is opened when ready.
Guide limitations
- The default data directory is
~/.config/comfy-uion Linux and~/Library/Application Support/comfy-uion macOS. - The documented platform support is macOS Apple Silicon and Linux; the default command does not select a GPU-specific package.
Run the CUDA package on Linux with NVIDIA
Launch the CUDA build of ComfyUI on a Linux system with a supported NVIDIA GPU.
Before you start
- Nix is available on the host.
- The host runs Linux and has an NVIDIA GPU with architecture Turing (RTX 20 series) through Blackwell (RTX 50 series).
- The NVIDIA driver is version 580 or newer.
Steps
Run
nix run github:utensils/comfyui-nix#cuda.Use ComfyUI with the launched CUDA package.
Expected outcome
The CUDA ComfyUI package is launched using pre-built PyTorch wheels.
Guide limitations
- CUDA 13 does not support pre-Turing GPUs; Pascal and Volta users must use an older comfyui-nix release.
- The documented package downloads approximately 2 GB of pre-built wheels.
