Who it is for

  • Apple-platform users exploring Kokoro text-to-speech.
  • Developers evaluating voice styles and speech-generation performance in a SwiftUI app.

Documented uses

  • Generate speech from text using the Kokoro model.
  • Try different voice styles.
  • Review speech-generation performance metrics.

Requirements & limits

The project is open source under the Apache 2.0 license. Its README lists iOS 18.0+ and macOS 15.0+; iOS use requires a physical device, not an iOS simulator.

  • The app uses Apple’s MLX framework and is intended for Apple platforms.
  • The model file is about 600 MB and requires Git LFS to retrieve during cloning.
  • The project lists Kokoro iOS, MLX, MisakiSwift, and MLXUtilsLibrary as Swift Package Manager dependencies.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up the project in Xcode

Prepare the repository and open the project for building in Xcode.

Before you start

  • A Mac with Xcode
  • Git
  • Git LFS installed and configured
  • About 600 MB for the Kokoro model file

Steps

  1. Install and initialize Git LFS before cloning the repository.

  2. Clone the repository and check that Resources/kokoro-v1_0.safetensors was downloaded.

  3. If the model file is missing, download it from the repository and place it in the Resources directory.

  4. Open KokoroTestApp.xcodeproj in Xcode.

Expected outcome

The project and its model file are prepared in Xcode for the documented build-and-run stage.

Guide limitations

  • The README lists iOS 18.0+ and macOS 15.0+.
  • The app does not work on an iOS simulator because MLX support is unavailable there.
