Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Ragapp when you want to deploy and configure an agentic RAG chat application with Docker and select hosted or locally served models.

Who it is for

  • Teams hosting document-grounded chat in their own infrastructure.
  • Developers who want to configure a RAG chat experience and expose it through a chat interface or API.

Documented uses

  • Configure a RAG chat application through an admin interface.
  • Serve configured chat through a web interface or API.
  • Choose hosted OpenAI or Gemini models, or local models through Ollama.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The documented deployment path uses Docker; Docker Compose options cover Ollama with Qdrant and multiple Ragapp instances with a management UI.
  • Ragapp's container does not include authentication. The README places that responsibility on an API gateway, whose setup depends on the provider and services used.
  • The chat interface and API require prior configuration in the admin interface.
  • The project is licensed under Apache-2.0.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Start the Docker container and open the admin interface

Launch Ragapp locally and reach its configuration interface.

Before you start

  • Docker; the README recommends using the latest version.
  • A local port 8000 available for the container.

Steps

  1. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    docker run -p 8000:8000 ragapp/ragapp
  2. Open http://localhost:8000/admin to configure Ragapp.

Expected outcome

The Ragapp admin interface is available locally for configuration.

Guide limitations

  • The chat interface and API are functional only after Ragapp is configured.
  • The container has no built-in authentication layer; network-facing access requires an API gateway for authentication.
