Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you already operate a Bitcoin Core node and want its metrics available to Prometheus, with a project-provided Grafana dashboard file as a starting point for visualization.
Who it is for
- Operators who want Bitcoin Core node metrics in a Prometheus monitoring stack.
- Teams using Grafana to visualize metrics from their self-hosted Bitcoin infrastructure.
Documented uses
- Connect a Bitcoin Core node to a Prometheus metrics workflow.
- View exported node metrics using the included Grafana dashboard definition.
- Run the exporter as a Docker container alongside self-hosted Bitcoin infrastructure.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies a BSD-3-Clause license.
- The exporter requires Bitcoin Core RPC host and authentication details.
- The repository includes a Grafana dashboard JSON file, described as rudimentary.
- The README documents Docker usage and does not require the bitcoin-cli binary for the exporter.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Run the exporter container with Bitcoin Core RPC details
Start the documented Docker image with a Bitcoin Core node host and RPC credentials configured.
Before you start
- Docker
- A reachable Bitcoin Core node
- The node's RPC host, username, and password
Steps
Run the Docker image jvstein/bitcoin-prometheus-exporter:v0.9.0.
Map port 9332 and set BITCOIN_RPC_HOST, BITCOIN_RPC_USER, and BITCOIN_RPC_PASSWORD as shown in the README.
Expected outcome
The exporter container is configured to connect to the specified Bitcoin Core node and publish its metrics on the mapped port.
Guide limitations
- The README documents the container invocation but does not provide a Prometheus scrape configuration.
- The supplied Docker command uses example credentials; configure the environment variables with the target node's actual RPC details.
