Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to create or operate a searchable image collection and can manage a local or Docker-based deployment and its storage choice.
Who it is for
- People who want to search a self-managed image collection using descriptive text.
- Developers or operators setting up an image-search application with Qdrant or local SQLite storage.
Documented uses
- Find images in a collection by describing their content in natural language.
- Locate visually similar images using a reference image.
- Search image text extracted through OCR.
Requirements & limits
The project is publicly available on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license. The repository links a Docker image and a hosted homepage.
- Qdrant is the recommended metadata store; SQLite is available for smaller or development deployments but has O(n) search and limited horizontal scalability.
- The README states that a GPU is not required; CUDA support is an optional acceleration path.
- Local setup requires Python 3.10–3.12 and uv; the Docker route requires Docker and Docker Compose or an equivalent runtime.
- Enabling the built-in frontend in v1.5.0 or later places API paths under /api, which can affect existing deployments.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare a local Nekoimagegallery deployment
Install and configure the application locally, following the documented setup stages.
Before you start
- Python 3.10–3.12 and the uv package manager
- At least an x86_64 or ARM64 CPU with 2 cores, 4 GB RAM and 10 GB storage
- A metadata choice: Qdrant, or local SQLite for small-scale or development use
Steps
Choose Qdrant or local SQLite for metadata storage; deploy Qdrant separately if using it.
Clone the project and check out a specific version tag.
Install dependencies with the documented CPU or CUDA extra using uv sync --no-dev.
Adjust configuration in the config directory, then start the application with uv run main.py.
Expected outcome
The documented local setup sequence installs, configures and starts the application.
Guide limitations
- The setup instructions apply to v1.4.0 and later; earlier versions use their corresponding tagged README.
- CUDA acceleration requires selecting a CUDA dependency extra and suitable runtime support.
- Local SQLite storage is intended for small-scale or development use; searches are unindexed O(n), the setup is stateful, and migration to Qdrant may be difficult.
- The guide describes setup, not verification of a successful deployment.
Compare options for Vector search
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nekoimagegallery | Find images in a collection by describing their content in natural language. | Docker, Self-hosted, Web | The project is publicly available on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license. The repository links a Docker image and a hosted homepage. |
| arXiv Search API | Search for arXiv papers using natural-language queries and vector similarity. | Cloud, Server, Web | The README identifies a hosted demo at https://docsearch.redisvl.com and provides a local setup path. Local setup instructions request OpenAI and Cohere API keys. |
| Alisia | Ask questions in a chat interface and receive responses informed by web search. | Cloud, Self-hosted, Web |
