Practical overview
When it fits
Use Memind when an agent needs to retain and retrieve structured context beyond its current session, especially when that context includes ongoing tasks, tool history or connected relationships between memories.
Who it is for
- Developers building AI agents that need memory across sessions.
- Teams preserving project context, tool experience or task history for coding and workflow agents.
- Builders of conversational assistants that need to retrieve user preferences or longer-term context.
Documented uses
- Capture conversation history and retrieve relevant context for a later agent interaction.
- Organize tool-call and resolved-task history into reusable agent experience.
- Make stored memory accessible to an agent through REST or MCP.
- Embed a memory runtime in a Java application.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies the Apache-2.0 license. The documented local Docker Compose setup requires Docker Compose and a model-provider key.
- Memind is a Java library and self-hosted server option, rather than a hosted consumer chatbot.
- Its memory model includes graphs, threads and Insight Trees as well as retrieval across stored context.
- Model-backed extraction and retrieval require provider credentials in the documented Compose setup.
- REST and MCP are listed as access methods; a particular agent integration is not validated by the repository description.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Memind locally with Docker Compose
Start the Memind server and admin UI using the documented Compose setup.
Before you start
- Docker with the Compose plugin
- A model-provider key for chat and embedding models
Steps
Copy
.env.exampleto.env.Set the provider key, base URL and chat and embedding model names in
.env.Run the command below.
docker compose up -d --buildCheck the server health endpoint at
http://localhost:8366/open/v1/health.
Expected outcome
The server and admin UI are started locally; the health endpoint checks whether the server is running.
Guide limitations
- Model credentials are validated when extraction, retrieval, embedding or reranking is performed, not by the health check alone.
- The documented setup requires a model-provider key.
