Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when building a TypeScript agent application where you want reusable model and tool primitives but need to own the state and orchestration decisions.
Who it is for
- TypeScript developers building agentic AI applications with Effect.
- Teams that want to define their own agent state, tool handling and loop policies.
Documented uses
- Stream a model turn and process its text, reasoning and tool events.
- Apply application-defined approval rules to model-requested tool calls.
- Run typed tools, append their results to state and continue a model interaction.
- Use components for retrieval, search, reading, speech or sandbox-related workflows.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and displays an MIT license. Its README labels the project experimental and warns that minor releases during 0.x may include breaking changes.
- The project supplies primitives rather than a complete framework or agent runtime; the application owns its loop and state.
- The README describes OpenAI Responses, Anthropic, Gemini and OpenAI-compatible gateways normalizing to a shared TurnEvent union.
- The core package lists model, tool, retrieval-adjacent, search, browser, sandbox, speech and generation interfaces; provider-specific support should be checked against the individual package documentation.
- The project is experimental, and 0.x minor releases may contain breaking changes.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install effect-uai core with the OpenAI Responses provider
Add the core agent-building primitives, OpenAI Responses provider layer, and Effect runtime to a project using pnpm.
Before you start
- A project using pnpm.
Steps
Open a terminal in the project.
Run
pnpm add @effect-uai/core @effect-uai/responses effect.
Expected outcome
The project has the core package, the OpenAI Responses provider layer, and the Effect runtime installed for building an agent loop.
Guide limitations
- This documents installation only; it does not cover implementing or running an agent.
- The project is in 0.x, where minor releases may include breaking changes.
