Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to make selected vector-database operations available as defined tools rather than exposing general database administration actions.
Who it is for
- Developers connecting AI agents to records in a vector database.
- Teams defining constrained search, lookup or count operations for application data.
Documented uses
- Define typed agent-facing parameters and outputs for vector-database operations.
- Keep fixed tenant filters out of the tool schema presented to the model.
- Expose configured tools within a Python application or through an MCP server.
Requirements & limits
The repository identifies Python 3.11 or later and Apache-2.0 licensing.
- The tool contract is configured in tools.yaml, including operations, parameters, filters and output fields.
- The documented integration choices are in-process Python tools and MCP serving over stdio or HTTP.
- The repository labels backend support experimental, so check the project's conformance and backend documentation for the store you plan to use.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Create a VectorSmith starter tools.yaml
Generate a starter configuration file for defining vector-database tools.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or later.
- VectorSmith installed and available on the command line.
Steps
Run
vectorsmith init ./demo.Use the generated starter file as the basis for a
tools.yamlconfiguration; consult the tools YAML reference for supported fields.
Expected outcome
A starter configuration file is written in the `./demo` directory for further tool definition.
Guide limitations
- This guide covers initialization only; it does not document configuring a backend, compiling tools, or calling them.
