Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it for browser-based Ethereum learning and DApp development when you want Solidity editing, compilation and an in-browser EVM in the same workspace.

Who it is for

  • People learning Ethereum and Solidity development.
  • Developers building or prototyping Ethereum decentralized applications.
  • Contributors who want to run or build the TypeScript project locally.

Documented uses

  • Edit Solidity code with code completion.
  • Compile Solidity and work with an in-browser EVM.
  • Bootstrap an app and live-code its web interface.
  • Work with local or public Ethereum networks.
  • Run the IDE locally or create a production build from its repository.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The browser experience requires no installation to run; the repository’s local development workflow separately requires Node.js and npm.
  • The IDE includes a Solidity compiler, an in-browser EVM, code autocompletion and built-in wallets.
  • It supports local and public Ethereum networks.
  • The public repository identifies the project as TypeScript and GPL-3.0 licensed.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Ethereum Studio locally

Prepare and start the project’s development server on localhost.

Before you start

  • Node.js and npm, for the documented npm and npx commands.
  • A local copy of the Ethereum Studio repository.

Steps

  1. Run the command below to install and bootstrap the project’s Node modules.

    Documented command
    npx lerna bootstrap --hoist
  2. Run the command below to launch development mode.

    Documented command
    npm start
  3. Open http://localhost:3000 in a browser.

Expected outcome

The development version is served locally at `http://localhost:3000`.

Guide limitations

  • For a hostname or IP other than localhost, update the ORIGIN value in env.development so the iframes can communicate with the main window.
