Flood

Flood is a Python load-testing tool for benchmarking EVM nodes through RPC. It sends configurable patterns of RPC calls and measures throughput, latency and error rates, with options to compare nodes, configurations or providers and generate reports.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Flood when evaluating how EVM nodes respond to controlled RPC request patterns, or when comparing performance across nodes and configurations.

Who it is for

  • Developers and infrastructure teams evaluating EVM node performance.
  • Teams comparing node clients, hardware or software configurations, and RPC providers.

Documented uses

  • Apply controlled request loads to an EVM node’s RPC endpoint.
  • Measure throughput, latency percentiles and error rates for RPC methods.
  • Compare node or provider results and generate shareable reports.
  • Use differential tests to check whether two nodes return matching responses.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The documented CLI installation requires Python 3.7 or later and Vegeta on the system path; a Docker image is also offered.
  • Tests can run from the local machine or a remote process, with remote runs requiring login credentials and routing details.
  • Flood measures load-related performance; its differential-test mode instead compares responses between two nodes.
  • Runs save parameters and results, including metrics, figures and summaries, to an output directory.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Flood for RPC benchmarking

Prepare the documented Python CLI installation and confirm the command is available.

Before you start

  • Python 3.7 or later
  • Vegeta installed and available on the system path
  • pip

Steps

  1. Install Vegeta for your operating system and ensure it is on your path.

  2. Install Flood with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install paradigm-flood
  3. Run flood help to display the command help; if the executable is not on your path, the README documents the command below as an alternative.

    Documented command
    python3 -m flood

Expected outcome

Flood is installed and its help output can be accessed from the terminal.

Guide limitations

  • This guide covers installation and help access only, not a completed benchmark run.
  • Docker is also documented as an alternative, but its setup steps are not included here.
