Practical overview
When it fits
Use it as a learning reference or starting point when building a chat-based assistant grounded in documentation and retrieved passages.
Who it is for
- Developers learning to build retrieval-augmented generation applications.
- Teams exploring a question-answering assistant for technical documentation or manuals.
Documented uses
- Ask questions about LangChain documentation through a chat interface.
- Crawl and prepare documentation for retrieval using vector search.
- Study an example combining LangChain, Pinecone, Tavily, OpenAI GPT and Streamlit.
Requirements & limits
- The documented setup requires separate OpenAI, Pinecone and Tavily API keys.
- The README’s example ingestion target is LangChain documentation, so another corpus may require changes.
- Repository metadata lists Apache-2.0, while the README states MIT; check the repository license file.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the documentation assistant
Install the project, ingest LangChain documentation and start its Streamlit interface.
Before you start
- Python 3.8 or higher
- OpenAI API key
- Pinecone API key
- Tavily API key
- Pipenv
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Create a root-level .env file with PINECONE_API_KEY, OPENAI_API_KEY and TAVILY_API_KEY.
Install dependencies with pipenv install.
Run python ingestion.py to crawl and index LangChain documentation.
Start the interface with streamlit run main.py and open http://localhost:8501.
Expected outcome
A locally launched Streamlit interface for asking questions about the ingested LangChain documentation.
Guide limitations
- The documented ingestion target is LangChain documentation; the README does not provide a separate procedure for another corpus.
- The guide reflects README setup instructions and is not a human-verified execution test.
Compare options for Vector search
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| LangChain Documentation Helper | Ask questions about LangChain documentation through a chat interface. | Web | |
| Serviette | Answer questions from a maintained folder of documents and cite the sources used. | Linux, Self-hosted, Server | Serviette is self-hosted and MIT-licensed. Setup requires a free Pathway license key. Provider API keys are needed for the corresponding API-based embedding or generated-answer options. |
| Chatbot with PDF for Semantic Search | Prepare document content as embeddings and save it to a supported vector database. | Web | The repository is identified as open source and publicly visible on GitHub. |
