Practical overview
When it fits
Use Pocket Core when you need the protocol implementation to run or configure Pocket Network node infrastructure. Consult the Pocket Network documentation for tutorials and technical information beyond the repository's brief build and command-line guidance.
Who it is for
- Operators setting up or managing Pocket Network full nodes.
- Developers building deployment-specific node configurations or working with the Pocket Core implementation.
Documented uses
- Build the Pocket Core command-line binary from source.
- Run the Pocket Core daemon as part of a Pocket Network full-node deployment.
- Select enabled functionality and modules for a deployment.
- Use command groups for node, account, application and governance management, or query the blockchain.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the project as MIT-licensed. Its README documents Linux and macOS platform options and a Go build path.
- Pocket Core is protocol implementation software for running node infrastructure, not a hosted portal.
- Deployment-specific functionality and modules can be enabled or disabled.
- The README documents command-line flags for data directories, peer lists, seed lists, and remote endpoints.
- The repository provides a Docker image route as well as source-build instructions.
- Supporting services and resources such as snapshots, pruning, TestNet information, and analytics are maintained separately.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build the Pocket Core binary from source
Create a local Pocket Core binary using the repository's documented Go build steps.
Before you start
- Git access to the Pocket Core repository
- Go; the README badge identifies Go 1.21
Steps
Clone the repository using the documented command: git clone git@github.com:pokt-network/pocket.
Change into the cloned pocket directory.
Build the binary with go build app/cmd/pocket_core/pocket.go.
Optionally set POKT to the resulting local binary path as shown in the README.
Expected outcome
A locally built Pocket Core binary, with an optional POKT environment variable pointing to it.
Guide limitations
- This covers building the binary only; it does not configure or start a node.
- The README also refers to a quickstart for alternative installation methods.
