Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a command-line PyTorch workflow for training an image GAN on your own data and generating samples from its checkpoints.
Who it is for
- Python and deep-learning practitioners training a GAN on a local image collection.
- Researchers or developers exploring GAN training, image augmentation and checkpoint-based sample generation.
Documented uses
- Train a GAN using images in a local directory.
- Configure image size, batch size, gradient accumulation and training steps.
- Preview augmentation effects before applying them during training.
- Generate samples or interpolations from a saved model checkpoint.
- Optionally track and compare training runs with Aim.
Requirements & limits
The public repository is released under the MIT license. The README documents installation through pip.
- Training input is a local image directory, and image size is set through a command-line option.
- The tool saves checkpoints and sample outputs to local directories.
- Augmentation settings can be selected and previewed; the README emphasizes their importance for low-data training.
- Mixed precision, multi-GPU training and optional Aim tracking are documented as additional options.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Train a GAN from a local image directory
Start a Lightweight Gan training run and save checkpoints and sample images.
Before you start
- Python environment with the Lightweight Gan package installed using pip.
- A local directory of training images.
- PyTorch-compatible compute environment.
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
pip install lightweight-ganRun
lightweight_gan --data ./path/to/images --image-size 512, replacing the data path with the image directory. For a configured run, add documented options such as
--name,--batch-size,--gradient-accumulate-every, or--num-train-steps.
Expected outcome
The model is saved under `./models/{name}` and training samples under `./results/{name}`; the default run name is `default`, and checkpoints are saved every 1,000 iterations.
Guide limitations
- Training time and results depend on the data and compute; the README's sample training time is an example, not a guarantee.
- The repository describes the commands for deep-learning practitioners and does not specify hardware requirements beyond its example of one GPU.
Preview image augmentations
Create a preview image showing how the documented augmentation process transforms an input image.
Before you start
- Lightweight Gan installed.
- A path to an input image.
Steps
Run
lightweight_gan --aug-test --data ./path/to/image.jpg, substituting the input image path.Optionally set documented preview options such as
--image-size,--batch-size,--num-image-tiles, or--aug-types.
Expected outcome
The command creates an augmented preview image alongside the input, with a filename such as `image_augs.jpg`.
Guide limitations
- The preview command documents augmentation visualization, not model training or generated-image quality.
- Available transformations include color, cutout, offset and translation; horizontal flip is applied by default.
