Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an agent needs to act through a graphical interface, such as automating an application or testing a UI, rather than relying only on application APIs.
Who it is for
- Python developers building agents to operate desktop applications.
- Teams automating or testing mobile app interfaces.
- Developers building RPA workflows or agents for HMI interactions.
Documented uses
- Find interface elements by visible text, images or natural-language descriptions.
- Issue high-level instructions or direct actions such as typing and clicking.
- Extract information from screens and extend agent behavior with custom tools.
Requirements & limits
The SDK requires Python 3.10 or later. Its README documents `pip install askui` and says AskUI signup provides a free trial without a credit card, along with a workspace ID and access token.
- Desktop platforms named in the README are Windows, macOS and Linux; the feature list names Android, while the opening description also names iOS. Consult platform-specific documentation when selecting a mobile target.
- Agents require a model provider. The README names AskUI, Anthropic, OpenRouter and Hugging Face, and describes support for custom providers.
- The minimal installation is presented for everyday automation; optional extras can be added for particular integrations, or installed together with
askui[all]. - The repository identifies the SDK as MIT-licensed.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up AskUI credentials for the ComputerAgent example
Prepare the documented AskUI model-provider credentials and environment variables used by the example agent.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or later
- AskUI workspace ID and access token, obtained by signing up at hub.askui.com
- A connection to an AI model provider
Steps
Install the SDK with the command below.
pip install askuiSign up with AskUI to obtain a workspace ID and access token.
Set
ASKUI_WORKSPACE_IDandASKUI_TOKENin the shell environment; use the README's Linux/macOS or Windows PowerShell examples.Use the ComputerAgent example in the README as the next step.
Expected outcome
The documented credentials are configured for the AskUI-provider ComputerAgent example.
Guide limitations
- This recipe covers installation and credential setup only; it does not claim that an agent run has been verified.
- The example requires access to an AI model provider. The README describes a free trial without a credit card for AskUI signup; terms may change.
