Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an Ape Framework workflow needs to retrieve contract information from an Etherscan-compatible explorer or publish a contract for verification.
Who it is for
- Ape Framework developers who want explorer-backed contract type lookup.
- Smart-contract developers who want transaction explorer links in CLI output.
- Ape users who need to publish and verify contracts through supported Etherscan-compatible explorers.
Documented uses
- Find a contract type for an address through an explorer when it is not already cached in Ape.
- Get explorer URLs for submitted transactions in CLI output.
- Request publication and verification of an Ape contract on a supported explorer.
Requirements & limits
- The documented Python requirement is versions 3.9 through 3.12.
- The README lists a subset of supported explorer networks; confirm the specific network configuration before relying on it.
- Contract publishing requires an Etherscan API key set as an environment variable.
- Multi-file verification is not supported by every network’s explorer; single-file flattening may be used.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Ape Etherscan and configure an explorer key
Install the plugin and provide an API key for explorer requests.
Before you start
- Python 3.9 through 3.12
- An Etherscan API key obtained by registering with Etherscan
Steps
Install the plugin with the command below.
pip install ape-etherscanSet the environment variable for the explorer and network you use, such as
ETHERSCAN_API_KEYorBASESCAN_API_KEY.
Expected outcome
The plugin is installed and an explorer API key is available to the environment for supported requests.
Guide limitations
- The README describes additional installation through setuptools, but the steps here cover only pip installation.
- An API key is specifically required for the publishing feature; the guide does not establish that every plugin operation requires one.
Publish a deployed contract for explorer verification
Request explorer verification of an Ape contract during deployment.
Before you start
- Ape Framework project and configured deployment account
- An Etherscan API key set as an environment variable
- A network whose explorer supports the required verification format
Steps
Load the deployment account in an Ape script.
Deploy the project contract with
publish=True.
Expected outcome
Ape requests publication and verification of the contract through the configured explorer.
Guide limitations
- Explorer support for multi-file verification varies; the relevant compiler plugin’s flatten functionality is used for explorers requiring a single-file submission.
- The documented example does not guarantee that verification will succeed for a particular network or contract.
Compare options for Blockchain exploration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
