Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it after a meeting when you have an audio or video recording to process. It does not provide the recording itself.

Who it is for

  • People who have meeting recordings and need transcripts and structured minutes.
  • Teams that want to choose hosted or locally run transcription and summarisation providers.
  • Operators comfortable running a Docker application or managing a Python, ffmpeg and Redis setup.

Documented uses

  • Turn a meeting recording into a text transcript.
  • Generate concise meeting minutes from the recording.
  • Attribute decisions and action items to speakers when the chosen transcription provider supplies speaker labels.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The README documents a local Docker setup and a non-Docker setup. The first launch asks the operator to create an administrator account.

  • Choose a transcription provider and a separate summarisation endpoint in the app’s Settings.
  • Local Whisper is documented as an option that needs no API key; other providers may require their own credentials.
  • The documented non-Docker setup requires Python 3.10 or newer, ffmpeg on PATH, and Redis.
  • Speaker labels depend on the transcription provider; the README marks some compatible options as not providing them.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up the app with Docker

Start the application locally and configure its transcription and summarisation providers.

Before you start

  • Docker
  • A transcription provider and an LLM endpoint; hosted services may require their own API credentials

Steps

  1. Clone the project repository and change into its directory.

  2. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    docker compose up --build
  3. Open http://localhost:5000 and create the administrator account.

  4. In Settings, add an LLM endpoint and transcription provider, then use each provider’s Test control.

Expected outcome

The app is running locally with the selected providers configured for recording transcription and minutes generation.

Guide limitations

  • The guide documents setup and provider checks; it does not describe the recording-processing steps in detail.
  • Provider credentials and services are separate from the app.
