Pallas

Pallas is a collection of Rust modules that reimplement common Ouroboros and Cardano logic. Its umbrella crate organizes and re-exports building blocks for networking, ledger operations, cryptography and related tasks, for use as a foundation in higher-level software.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Pallas when developing a Rust application that needs reusable Cardano or Ouroboros components, choosing the umbrella crate for its organized module tree or individual crates for a narrower selection.

Who it is for

  • Rust developers building software for the Cardano ecosystem.
  • Teams developing Cardano explorers, wallets or other applications that reuse Ouroboros and Cardano logic.

Documented uses

  • Reuse Ouroboros networking components in a Cardano application.
  • Work with multi-era ledger primitives and traversal helpers.
  • Encode Cardano addresses or validate transactions.
  • Use cryptographic and CBOR codec building blocks.
  • Build higher-level software such as an explorer or wallet.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The umbrella crate re-exports building blocks under a single module tree; individual crates are available for selecting a subset.
  • The network2 feature enables a P2P-first networking stack.
  • The phase2 feature enables Plutus script validation in ledger validation.
  • The hardano feature enables Haskell-node interoperability.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Add Pallas to a Rust project

Make Pallas’s organized Cardano and Ouroboros building blocks available as a project dependency.

Before you start

  • A Rust project that uses Cargo.

Steps

  1. Add the umbrella crate with the command below.

    Documented command
    cargo add pallas
  2. Choose the building blocks you need from the crate’s module tree, such as network, ledger, crypto, or txbuilder.

  3. Enable an umbrella-crate feature when needed: network2 for the P2P-first networking stack, phase2 for Plutus validation, or hardano for Haskell-node interop.

Expected outcome

The project has the Pallas umbrella dependency and can use its re-exported building blocks; selected feature flags enable the associated capabilities.

Guide limitations

  • Pallas provides building blocks rather than a complete application; application-specific integration remains to be developed.
  • The unstable feature aggregates feature gates that are not yet stable.
Source-based practical guide

Add selected Pallas crates to a Rust project

Depend on specific Pallas building blocks instead of the umbrella crate.

Before you start

  • A Rust project that uses Cargo.
  • Knowledge of which Pallas crates the project needs.

Steps

  1. Identify the required building-block crates from the project’s domain groups, such as pallas-network for networking or pallas-traverse for multi-era block traversal.

  2. Add the selected crates with Cargo, for example the command below.

    Documented command
    cargo add pallas-network pallas-traverse
  3. Use the selected crates as the project’s chosen Pallas building blocks.

Expected outcome

The project depends on the selected Pallas crates rather than the umbrella crate.

Guide limitations

  • This approach requires selecting and adding the needed crates individually.
  • The source describes the crates but does not provide application-specific integration steps.
