Practical overview
When it fits
Consider Model2Vec when a workflow needs text embeddings and reduced model size or faster inference is valuable, and when the potential performance trade-off suits the task.
Who it is for
- Python developers building text-embedding components for search, retrieval, clustering or classification.
- Teams seeking a smaller, faster static representation of a sentence-transformer model.
- Practitioners who want to fine-tune compact embeddings for supported downstream tasks.
Documented uses
- Convert a sentence-transformer model into a static embedding model.
- Load a pre-trained Model2Vec model and encode text.
- Fine-tune a pre-trained or distilled model for supported prediction and similarity tasks.
Requirements & limits
The implementation is a public GitHub repository under the MIT license. The documented package is installed in a Python environment; pre-trained models are loaded from Hugging Face Hub.
- The project reports up to 50-fold model-size reduction and up to 500-fold faster CPU inference, with a small performance drop; results can vary by model and workload.
- The base package is for loading and using models; distillation and training require the corresponding
distillandtrainextras. - The README identifies NumPy as the base package's only major dependency.
- The documented distillation workflow does not require a dataset.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Distill and save a static embedding model
Create a Model2Vec model from a sentence-transformer model and save it locally.
Before you start
- Python environment with the Model2Vec distillation extra installed using
pip install model2vec[distill]. - A sentence-transformer model name, such as the documented
BAAI/bge-base-en-v1.5example.
Steps
Install the distillation extra: the command below.
pip install model2vec[distill]Call
distill(model_name="BAAI/bge-base-en-v1.5")frommodel2vec.distill.Save the returned model with
m2v_model.save_pretrained("m2v_model").
Expected outcome
A distilled Model2Vec model saved in the `m2v_model` directory.
Guide limitations
- The project describes distillation as taking about 30 seconds on a CPU; actual time may vary.
- The README notes a small performance drop as a trade-off for smaller, faster models.
Load a pre-trained model and encode text
Generate embeddings from text with a pre-trained Model2Vec model.
Before you start
- Python environment with the base package installed using
pip install model2vec. - A pre-trained Model2Vec model available from the Hugging Face Hub, such as
minishlab/potion-base-32M.
Steps
Install the base package: the command below.
pip install model2vecLoad the model using
StaticModel.from_pretrained("minishlab/potion-base-32M").Pass a list of text strings to
model.encode(...)to create embeddings.
Expected outcome
A set of text embeddings produced by the loaded static model.
Guide limitations
- This recipe covers embedding generation; using embeddings in retrieval, clustering or another application requires an additional workflow.
