Practical overview

When it fits

Use Parrot when you want an on-Mac meeting recorder with live document-grounded assistance, particularly for calls where reference material can help answer questions.

Who it is for

  • Mac users who want to record and transcribe calls without adding a meeting bot.
  • People who need answers grounded in their own PDFs, text files, or Markdown documents during meetings.
  • Users who want a choice of local or connected AI assistant configurations.

Documented uses

  • Capture meeting audio from the Mac and produce a transcript.
  • Find relevant information in personal documents to help answer questions during a call.
  • Keep questions, objections, and promised next steps visible during a meeting.
  • Create a report from a meeting.

Requirements & limits

The setup guide specifies macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon. The repository identifies the project as GPL-3.0 open source.

  • Private mode uses Ollama locally; Balanced sends text to Claude; Cloud uses Deepgram for live transcription and Claude for assistance.
  • System-audio and microphone permissions are required; on macOS 14, system-audio capture uses Screen Recording permission and requires reopening Parrot to take effect.
  • The setup guide says Parrot selects a transcription model based on the Mac’s memory and the languages used.
  • Claude and Cloud configurations require user-provided service keys.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Parrot and complete its first-run setup

Install Parrot on a supported Mac, grant its audio permissions, choose an Assistant mode, and let it start downloading a speech-to-text model.

Before you start

  • A Mac running macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later on Apple Silicon.
  • A downloaded notarized Parrot .dmg from the Releases page.

Steps

  1. Download the notarized .dmg from the GitHub Releases page and drag Parrot into Applications.

  2. In the welcome tour, allow System Audio Recording and Microphone. On macOS 14, grant Screen Recording for system audio and reopen Parrot for that permission to take effect.

  3. Choose Private, Balanced, or Cloud in the tour, or select Decide later to return to Assistant setup from Home or Settings.

  4. Let Parrot select a speech-to-text model for your Mac and languages and begin downloading it; the download continues after the tour closes.

Expected outcome

Parrot is installed, permissions are set, an Assistant mode is selected or deferred, and a speech-to-text model download has started.

Guide limitations

  • Requires macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon.
  • System-audio permission differs by macOS version: macOS 14 uses Screen Recording and requires reopening Parrot; macOS 15 and later use the audio-only System Audio Recording permission.
  • Balanced sends text to Claude; Cloud uses Deepgram for live transcription and Claude for the Assistant. The setup guide describes Private as running everything on the Mac with Ollama.
