Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Quivr when evaluating a self-hosted foundation for continuous ingestion, searchable content and monitoring, especially when the pipeline needs domain-specific plugins. Its stated evaluation-stage status makes it unsuitable as a production-ready choice today.

Who it is for

  • Teams building internal search over continually updated content
  • Developers creating topic-monitoring and alerting workflows
  • Organizations that need to adapt ingestion, enrichment or retrieval to domain-specific formats and rules

Documented uses

  • Ingest and retain incoming content for later retrieval
  • Search content using lexical and vector methods
  • Follow topics over time and deliver alerts
  • Extend formats, AI models and business rules through plugins

Requirements & limits

The repository identifies Quivr as open source under the MIT license. Its local development instructions require Docker Compose and the listed development tools.

  • Quivr is infrastructure with an API and worker, not just a search interface; its browser demo is a separate UI over the API.
  • PostgreSQL and S3-compatible storage hold canonical data, while Weaviate provides the lexical and vector search index.
  • Text can be lexically searchable before embeddings and later enrichment are complete.
  • The API is version v0 and the project cautions against production use at this stage.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Run Quivr’s local checks

Run the repository’s documented checks and isolated-stack end-to-end verification.

Before you start

  • The repository’s documented quickstart requirements: Go 1.27.2, Docker with Compose v2, Python 3 with venv, Node.js 22 or later, and jq.
  • Linux x86_64 for make verify.

Steps

  1. Run the command below for documentation, contract, vet, and unit-test checks; Docker is not required for this target.

    Documented command
    make check
  2. On Linux x86_64, run the command below to run the command below followed by end-to-end journeys on an isolated stack.

    Documented command
    make verify
    Documented command
    make check
  3. Read the printed report.md path for failed steps, pinned versions, and the dependency inventory.

Expected outcome

The checks run, and verification reports its results in a generated `report.md`.

Guide limitations

  • make verify is documented for Linux x86_64 only.
  • Quivr is at evaluation stage; its v0 API may change without notice, and the project says not to run it in production.
