Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Genesis when development or testing calls for a private environment containing multiple controllable nodes rather than a public network.

Who it is for

  • Blockchain and Web3 developers who need private multi-node test environments.
  • Teams building test harnesses for node or peer-to-peer behavior.

Documented uses

  • Provision multiple nodes in a private test network.
  • Control the provisioned nodes during development and testing.
  • Configure a REST API listener for service control.
  • Connect command and completion queues through RabbitMQ.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The public GitHub repository identifies GPL-3.0 licensing and references a Docker image.

  • Genesis is implemented in Go and is published under GPL-3.0.
  • The documented configuration supports standalone mode and a REST API listener.
  • RabbitMQ settings include AMQP protocol, command and completion queue names, and connection credentials and host details.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Configure Genesis for standalone test mode

Set Genesis to standalone mode and specify its REST API listener and RabbitMQ connection settings.

Before you start

  • Genesis configuration supports the documented general and RabbitMQ settings.
  • A RabbitMQ host, port, credentials, and virtual host are available if queue connectivity is required.

Steps

  1. Set LOCAL_MODE to true to enable standalone mode for testing.

  2. Set LISTEN to the socket address for the REST API, or retain the documented default 0.0.0.0:8000.

  3. Configure RabbitMQ connection settings with QUEUE_PROTOCOL, QUEUE_HOST, QUEUE_PORT, QUEUE_USER, QUEUE_PASSWORD, and QUEUE_VHOST as needed.

  4. Set the command and completion queue names with COMMAND_QUEUE_NAME and COMPLETION_QUEUE_NAME, or retain the defaults commands and completion.

Expected outcome

Genesis configuration specifies standalone testing, a REST API listener, and RabbitMQ queue connection and naming settings.

Guide limitations

  • The source documents configuration options and defaults, but not how to apply them, launch Genesis, or exercise the REST API or queues.
  • The documented defaults are QUEUE_HOST=localhost, QUEUE_PORT=5672, QUEUE_USER=user, QUEUE_PASSWORD=password, and QUEUE_VHOST=/test; adjust these to match the RabbitMQ environment.
