Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want to connect an AI assistant or client application to a MetaTrader 5 terminal for account queries, market data, order operations or quote streaming.

Who it is for

  • MetaTrader 5 traders who want an AI assistant to query account or market information and invoke trading operations.
  • Developers building assistant-driven trading workflows or market-data dashboards around MetaTrader 5.

Documented uses

  • Ask an AI assistant for account balance, equity, margin or trading statistics.
  • Retrieve current prices, historical data or symbol information.
  • Place, modify or close orders through an assistant or HTTP interface.
  • Stream tick data such as bid, ask, spread and volume to a WebSocket client.

Requirements & limits

The project is an MIT-licensed public GitHub repository. The documented setup requires Python 3.10 or later, MetaTrader 5 and account credentials.

  • The server's trading functions connect to MetaTrader 5 and require an account login, password and server name.
  • The documented assistant integrations use different interfaces: local STDIO for Claude Desktop and HTTP tools for Open WebUI.
  • The WebSocket quote service is a separate interface for streaming market ticks, rather than the MCP assistant connection.
  • The project documentation says users are responsible for trades executed through the software and warns of financial trading risk.

Source-based practical guide

Set up the server for Claude Desktop

Install the package, enable algorithmic trading in MetaTrader 5, and configure Claude Desktop to connect over local STDIO.

Before you start

  • Python 3.10 or higher
  • MetaTrader 5 terminal and a demo or live account
  • MT5 login number, password and server name
  • Claude Desktop

Steps

  1. Install the package with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install metatrader-mcp-server
  2. In MetaTrader 5, open Tools → Options → Expert Advisors, enable Allow algorithmic trading, and confirm.

  3. Add the documented metatrader server entry to the Claude Desktop configuration, using your MT5 credentials and the stdio transport.

  4. Restart Claude Desktop to load the configuration.

Expected outcome

Claude Desktop is configured to connect to the MetaTrader MCP server; the documentation suggests asking for the account balance as an initial request.

Guide limitations

  • The guide requires an MT5 account and terminal; a custom terminal path may be needed if the installation is non-standard.
  • The project warns that trading involves risk and users are responsible for trades made through the software.

Configure a WebSocket quote stream

Start the quote server and connect a WebSocket client to receive MetaTrader 5 tick updates.

Before you start

  • Python 3.10 or higher
  • MetaTrader 5 terminal and account credentials
  • A WebSocket client

Steps

  1. Start metatrader-quote-server with the MT5 login, password and server arguments.

  2. Connect a WebSocket client to ws://localhost:8765.

  3. Read the server's connected message and subsequent tick updates, which can include bid, ask, spread and volume.

Expected outcome

A connected client can receive the quote-server message stream, including tick updates when the documented values change.

Guide limitations

  • The documented default endpoint is ws://localhost:8765; host, port, symbols and polling interval can be configured.
  • The stream depends on MetaTrader 5 data and reports an error message when a symbol cannot be fetched.
