Practical overview
When it fits
Use Auto Browser when an agent workflow needs a real Playwright browser and a human may need to supervise, approve or take over actions.
Who it is for
- AI-agent builders who need MCP-connected browser access
- Operators supervising authorized browser workflows
- Teams working with internal dashboards, admin tools, browser QA or debugging
Documented uses
- Give an MCP-compatible agent access to a live browser session.
- Let an operator take over when a login or brittle web flow needs human input.
- Save a named authentication profile and use it to start a later session.
- Inspect browser activity through screenshots, DOM summaries, OCR excerpts, tab controls, downloads and network inspection.
Requirements & limits
The documented local setup uses Docker Compose. The README also describes prebuilt Docker images and a Codespaces demo. The repository identifies the project as open source under the MIT license.
- MCP clients can connect over HTTP or stdio; direct REST callers are also supported.
- The bundled noVNC interface supports visual operator takeover of the live session.
- The operator dashboard includes a queue of actions awaiting approval.
- The documented local quickstart requires Docker access and permission to open localhost sockets.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Start Auto Browser locally with Docker Compose
Launch the documented local development stack and open its operator interfaces.
Before you start
- Docker Compose
- A normal terminal with local Docker access
- Permission to open localhost sockets
Steps
Clone the Auto Browser repository and change into its directory.
Run the command below.
docker compose up --buildOpen the API docs at
http://127.0.0.1:8000/docs, the operator dashboard athttp://127.0.0.1:8000/dashboard, or visual takeover athttp://127.0.0.1:6080/vnc.html?autoconnect=true&resize=scale.
Expected outcome
The local stack is available with API documentation, an operator dashboard and a noVNC visual takeover interface.
Guide limitations
- The README describes this as local development with default settings.
- Published ports bind to 127.0.0.1 by default.
