Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to build or run a web-based document Q&A workflow that retrieves relevant material before generating answers, and can configure the required service integrations.
Who it is for
- Researchers and readers who need to ask questions across papers or other document collections.
- Teams that want a searchable question-and-answer interface for internal documentation.
- Developers looking to deploy or adapt a document-chat application.
Documented uses
- Find relevant passages in a document collection using semantic search.
- Ask natural-language questions about uploaded files and receive document-grounded responses.
- Create a searchable knowledge base from PDFs, DOCX, text files and images with OCR.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The documented local setup requires configuring supporting services and API keys.
- Semantic search uses vector embeddings and supports Pinecone or pgvector.
- AI-provider options listed in the documentation include OpenRouter, OpenAI, ImageRouter and Anthropic.
- Optional Docling integration is described for table extraction, layout preservation and document structure handling.
- The documented stack includes Next.js 15, React 19, TypeScript 5 and Prisma.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare a local development setup
Install the application and configure its documented database, storage, authentication and AI-provider prerequisites.
Before you start
- Node.js and npm
- PostgreSQL 14+ or a Supabase project
- Clerk application keys
- A private Supabase Storage bucket named documents and its project API values
- At least one AI-provider API key
Steps
Clone the repository and install dependencies with npm install.
Copy .env.example to .env.local and add the database URL, Clerk keys, Supabase values and an AI-provider key.
Run npx prisma generate, npx prisma db push and npm run db:seed.
Start the development server with npm run dev and open http://localhost:3000.
Expected outcome
The documented local setup starts the web application on localhost:3000.
Guide limitations
- The guide covers local setup; it does not establish that any particular deployment or configuration has been tested.
- The application requires external database, authentication, file-storage and AI-provider configuration.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
