Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use MLCommons benchmark work when you need structured measurements of AI system performance or risk. For deployment decisions, evaluate the configuration you actually use, not only a foundation model’s reported result.

Who it is for

  • AI developers and evaluators comparing system performance.
  • Governance and risk teams seeking measurable evidence to inform AI controls.

Documented uses

  • Compare AI systems using quantitative performance measures.
  • Assess where an AI system may produce harmful responses.
  • Use evaluation results to inform controls and risk-register records.
  • Evaluate an agent against a bounded reliability claim and stated operating conditions.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The described AILuminate results include per-hazard grades that can help locate risk exposure relevant to a use case.
  • A model’s benchmark result does not by itself establish how a deployed configuration performs when prompts, internal data or tools are added.
  • The Agent Reliability Profile frames a claim in terms of autonomy tier, operational design domain and control envelope.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Use AILuminate results in an AI risk register

Use hazard-level benchmark results to identify exposure, guide controls, and record risk evidence for an AI system.

Before you start

  • AILuminate benchmark results for the model or system being assessed.
  • A defined use case and the AI configuration intended for deployment.
  • A risk register or equivalent process for recording exposures and controls.

Steps

  1. Review the per-hazard grades and identify where exposure concentrates for the intended use case.

  2. Use the results to select proportionate controls; for example, consider system-level guardrails when performance degrades under adversarial pressure.

  3. Test the configuration you actually intend to deploy using the same test as the vendor.

  4. Record the before-and-after grades in the risk register as quantified, comparable, auditable evidence.

Expected outcome

A risk-register entry linking measured hazard exposure, selected controls, and results for the deployed configuration.

Guide limitations

  • A foundation-model grade does not establish how a harnessed or deployed system will perform.
  • The guidance does not specify test access, procedures, or tools for running AILuminate evaluations.
  • Results support risk management but are not a general guarantee that a system is safe or reliable.
