Practical overview
When it fits
Use Node Ansible when you have Polygon hosts to manage and want to provision or perform documented operator tasks through Ansible rather than configure each task manually.
Who it is for
- Polygon node operators who provision and manage their own servers.
- Infrastructure teams that want to apply Ansible configuration across hosts listed in an inventory.
- Operators who need documented playbooks for node setup, sync checks, snapshots, backups or exporter installation.
Documented uses
- Configure Polygon validator, sentry or archive node hosts through Ansible playbooks.
- Preview which inventory hosts a node setup playbook will target.
- Check host reachability and Heimdall sync status.
- Set up validator wallet keys, create snapshots or back up validator configuration and data.
- Install node and process exporters for Prometheus monitoring.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an MIT license.
- The documented prerequisites are Python 3.x, Ansible and an inventory of target hosts.
- Playbook inputs include network, node type, Bor version and Heimdall version.
- The README includes an Amoy testnet option as well as mainnet.
- The cleanup playbook explicitly warns that it deletes all blockchain data.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare an inventory and preview a Polygon node setup
Configure target hosts in Ansible inventory and preview the hosts selected for a mainnet sentry setup.
Before you start
- Python 3.x and Ansible
- Target host IP addresses and SSH connection details
- An inventory.yml file
Steps
Add the target host IP addresses to inventory.yml, with the Ansible user and SSH private-key file as needed.
Check host reachability with
ansible all -m ping.Preview the mainnet sentry playbook targets with
ansible-playbook playbooks/network.yml --extra-var="bor_version=v0.3.0 heimdall_version=v0.3.0 network=mainnet node_type=sentry" --list-hosts.
Expected outcome
An inventory of managed machines and a list of hosts the documented mainnet sentry playbook will target.
Guide limitations
- The preview lists hosts but does not provision them.
- The command's Bor and Heimdall version values are examples.
Run the documented mainnet sentry setup
Apply the mainnet sentry playbook to hosts in the configured Ansible inventory.
Before you start
- Python 3.x and Ansible
- A populated inventory.yml with reachable target hosts
- Selected Bor and Heimdall version values
Steps
Use the inventory and reachability check described in the repository README.
Run
ansible-playbook playbooks/network.yml --extra-var="bor_version=v0.3.0 heimdall_version=v0.3.0 network=mainnet node_type=sentry" --list-hoststo preview the target hosts.Run
ansible-playbook playbooks/network.yml --extra-var="bor_version=v0.3.0 heimdall_version=v0.3.0 network=mainnet node_type=sentry"to apply the playbook.
Expected outcome
The documented Ansible playbook is run against the selected hosts for a mainnet sentry node setup.
Guide limitations
- The example version values are not a recommendation for current deployments.
- The README does not specify hardware sizing or a complete post-provisioning validation procedure.
