Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a desktop roleplay workspace that combines AI conversation with editable character sheets, lorebooks and configurable campaign tools.
Who it is for
- Tabletop players and game masters who want campaign conversations alongside character records and world notes.
- Roleplay writers who want to configure model prompts, tools and reusable character or lore context.
Documented uses
- Run an AI-assisted campaign conversation with character sheets and campaign materials in view.
- Track character stats, inventory, spell slots or relationships using editable sheet templates.
- Organize reusable world information and select lore entries for model context.
- Configure model connections, prompts and tools for a roleplay session.
Requirements & limits
Desktop builds are documented for Windows, macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, and Linux as .deb, .rpm and AppImage. Starting a chat requires connecting a model with provider API credentials or a self-hosted model. The repository specifies the AGPL-3.0 license.
- A model connection is required to start a chat; tool use additionally requires a model that supports tool calling.
- Cloud-model use sends the prompt and included context to the configured provider.
- Character sheet changes made during a chat belong to that chat and do not alter character defaults; template edits apply across characters using that template.
- The application stores app data locally and encrypts API keys at rest.
- SillyTavern presets and character cards can be imported.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
