Practical overview
When it fits
Use Haveno when a peer-to-peer exchange model involving Monero fits the task. For testing, the project points to a stagenet test network. Real trades require a third-party network; the official repository does not support them directly.
Who it is for
- People seeking to exchange Monero for supported fiat currencies such as USD, EUR or GBP.
- People seeking to exchange Monero for cryptocurrencies such as BTC, ETH or BCH.
- Developers interested in building, testing or contributing to an open-source Java exchange application.
Documented uses
- Arrange a peer-to-peer trade involving Monero and fiat or another cryptocurrency.
- Use a Monero stagenet test network to make test trades.
- Build Haveno or explore its development and contribution resources.
Requirements & limits
The project identifies Linux, macOS and Windows installation through a third-party installer and network. Real trades require a third-party network; the project says it does not endorse any networks.
- The exchange is centered on Monero; the README names USD, EUR and GBP and BTC, ETH and BCH as examples of counterparties.
- Test trades use Monero stagenet, while real trading requires a third-party network.
- The project says trades are peer-to-peer and non-custodial, with arbitration that does not give arbitrators access to funds.
- The repository states that Haveno has no token and that transactions use multisignature transactions on Monero.
- The project lists Java as its primary language and AGPL-3.0 as its license.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build and launch Haveno on the public stagenet test network
Build Haveno from the official repository and launch an instance connected to the public Monero stagenet test environment.
Before you start
- Ubuntu with make, wget, git, and Java JDK 21 installed, or Windows with MSYS2 configured as described in the installation guide.
- The public stagenet faucet for funding test XMR.
- The guide notes that development is ongoing and things may be slow or break.
Steps
Install the platform-specific dependencies described in the installation guide, including Java JDK 21.
Clone the official repository, enter its directory, and build it with
make.Run the command below to start an instance connected to the public test network.
make user1-desktop-stagenetIn the app's Funds tab, copy the generated XMR address; submit it to the stagenet faucet to receive test coins, then wait for 10 confirmations before spending them.
Create a fiat account in Account → National currency accounts, then choose an existing offer or open one and follow the app's prompts to fund and complete a test trade.
Expected outcome
A Haveno instance is connected to the public stagenet environment, where the guide describes making test trades with other users.
Guide limitations
- This is a test environment using Monero stagenet, not a real-trade mainnet setup.
- The official repository does not operate or endorse mainnet networks; real trades require a third-party network or a separately created mainnet network.
- The guide says development is ongoing and things may be slow or break.
- The faucet funding flow requires waiting for 10 confirmations; the guide estimates 20 minutes.
