Practical overview
When it fits
Use xPrivo when you want to connect an AI chat interface to a local or external model, or when you want to run and customize the interface yourself.
Who it is for
- People who want a chat interface for local AI models.
- Users who have API credentials for an external AI provider.
- Developers who want to self-host or customize an AI chat application.
Documented uses
- Chat with a model using a configured provider endpoint and credentials.
- Organize conversations in workspaces with custom instructions.
- Discuss supported document formats with an AI assistant.
- Run the interface locally for development or customization.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents hosted access at xprivo.com and a self-hosted option. For the hosted version, it describes a free tier with a daily request quota and occasional non-personalized ads, plus a PRO upgrade with unlimited daily requests and no ads. Its hosted access description says no account creation is required and describes a unique license key identifier.
- External model connections require the provider’s endpoint, API key and model name.
- Some providers may require a separately configured proxy because of CORS restrictions.
- Self-hosting requires Node.js 18 or later and npm.
- The README says complex PDFs can be problematic.
- The repository is licensed under AGPL-3.0.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Configure an external model in the hosted interface
Add an external provider to the hosted xPrivo chat using its endpoint and credentials.
Before you start
- Access to the hosted xPrivo interface
- An AI provider endpoint, API key and model name
Steps
Open Settings > Configure AI Models & Endpoints.
Choose Add Provider.
Enter a reference name, endpoint URL, API key as the authorization value, and model name.
Start a chat with the configured provider.
Expected outcome
The hosted interface has a configured external model available for chat.
Guide limitations
- Some providers may require a proxy to address browser CORS restrictions.
Start the self-hosted development server
Install the repository dependencies and launch the documented local development server.
Before you start
- Node.js 18 or higher
- npm
Steps
Clone the xPrivo repository and change into its project directory.
Run npm install to install dependencies.
Run npm run dev to start the development server.
Expected outcome
The README states that the app opens at http://localhost:5173.
Guide limitations
- The documented steps start a development server; they do not cover production deployment.
- External provider calls from a local browser may encounter CORS restrictions.
