Practical overview
When it fits
Use Uagents when you want to implement agent behavior in Python and its documented Fetch.ai network registration or agent communication patterns are relevant to the project.
Who it is for
- Python developers creating autonomous agents
- Teams prototyping applications made up of multiple agents
- Developers exploring agent communication and Fetch.ai ecosystem connections
Documented uses
- Define an agent and give it scheduled or event-driven work
- Prototype interactions among multiple agents
- Build agents that register on the Fetch.ai agent network
Requirements & limits
The project is a public GitHub repository licensed under Apache-2.0. The README specifies Python 3.10–3.13 for its quickstart.
- The quickstart requires Python 3.10–3.13.
- A named agent can be assigned a fixed address with a seed; otherwise its private key is stored locally.
- Startup registration on the Almanac connects agents to the Fetch.ai blockchain network.
- Agentverse telemetry is described for registered agents and can be disabled with
report_events.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Create and run a timed greeting agent
Install Uagents, define a named agent with a timed task, and run the example locally.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 to 3.13
- A Python environment in which to install the uagents package
Steps
Install the library with the command below.
pip install uagentsCreate a Python script that imports
AgentandContextfromuagentsand defines a named agent.Add an
@alice.on_interval(period=2.0)task that logs a greeting, then callalice.run()under the main guard.Run the script with the command below.
python agent.py
Expected outcome
The documented example prints the agent's greeting to the terminal every two seconds.
Guide limitations
- This is a minimal greeting demo, not a guide to deploying an agent or integrating an external service.
- Without a seed, the private key is stored locally in
private_keys.json; an unnamed agent gets a new address each run.
