Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want to avoid configuring the same MCP servers separately in each AI client, or when a team needs a shared gateway for discovery and access management.

Who it is for

  • Developers consolidating MCP server connections across AI clients.
  • Teams seeking a shared MCP server inventory, tool discovery, and access-control layer.

Documented uses

  • Register and manage multiple MCP servers in one place.
  • Connect compatible AI clients to registered servers through one endpoint.
  • Discover tools, prompts, and resources across registered servers.
  • Use optional tool groups to control which tools a client sees.

Requirements & limits

The project is open source under the MPL-2.0 license. Its repository provides Docker Compose and CLI setup instructions.

  • MCPJungle is a gateway layer; the MCP servers providing tools and resources must be registered with it.
  • The documented gateway endpoint uses streamable HTTP.
  • The README describes Docker Compose setups for local use and shared deployments.
  • The project identifies Go as its primary language.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Connect Claude Desktop to a local MCPJungle gateway

Start MCPJungle locally, register the Context7 MCP server, and configure Claude Desktop to use the gateway.

Before you start

  • Docker Compose
  • The MCPJungle CLI, installable using Homebrew or from the project releases
  • Claude Desktop
  • The Context7 MCP server URL: https://mcp.context7.com/mcp

Steps

  1. Fetch the project's docker-compose.yaml and start the server with docker compose up -d.

  2. Install the MCPJungle CLI, then register Context7 with mcpjungle register --name context7 --url https://mcp.context7.com/mcp.

  3. Add the documented mcp-remote configuration for http://localhost:8080/mcp to Claude Desktop's MCP server configuration.

  4. Ask Claude to use Context7 to retrieve documentation for /lodash/lodash.

Expected outcome

Claude Desktop is configured to access the registered Context7 server through MCPJungle's local endpoint.

Guide limitations

  • The example uses Claude Desktop and Context7; it does not establish behavior for other clients or MCP servers.
  • The guide describes a local gateway at http://localhost:8080/mcp.
