Ledgerforge

Ledgerforge is an open-source, Go-based double-entry ledger that records wallet transfers, payouts, billing activity, reservations and refunds in exact integer units. It provides a verifiable audit chain, spending controls enforced by the server and an MCP server for agent interactions. Applications connect through an HTTP API, Go library or local MCP server.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it as the ledger layer when an application needs exact integer accounting and traceable records for money movement. It is relevant when building wallet, payout, marketplace or billing workflows, including workflows where an AI agent needs restricted spending authority.

Who it is for

  • Fintech teams building wallet and stored-value products.
  • Marketplace and payout developers managing split allocations, reservations and settlement.
  • Teams implementing usage-based billing, refunds or reconciliation.
  • Builders connecting AI agents to money movement with server-enforced budgets and approvals.

Documented uses

  • Record balanced transfers and maintain account balances.
  • Reserve funds during a payout and commit or void the reservation after an external rail responds.
  • Split marketplace payments across seller, fee and platform balances.
  • Record metered charges with idempotent references and support safe retries.
  • Set per-key spending limits and approval holds for agent transactions.

Requirements & limits

The project is open source under the Apache-2.0 license. The README documents a local quickstart requiring Docker with Compose and Python 3, as well as release binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows and a container image.

  • The ledger records money movement, but connecting payment rails and defining the accounting model are application responsibilities.
  • PostgreSQL stores financial records and Redis runs queues and background workers; search and observability services are optional.
  • Amounts use integer units with explicit precision; postings and balance arithmetic avoid floating-point accounting.
  • Financial corrections and refunds create linked transactions; financial postings are preserved.
  • After a timeout, reuse the same unique transaction reference and look up the original result rather than retrying with a new reference.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Run the local balanced-transfer demo

Start the local quickstart and post its example transfer.

Before you start

  • Docker with Compose
  • Python 3

Steps

  1. Clone the repository and change into its directory.

  2. Run ./examples/quickstart/start.sh.

  3. Run ./examples/quickstart/transfer.sh.

  4. When finished, stop the demo with docker compose -p ledgerforge-demo -f examples/quickstart/compose.yaml down.

Expected outcome

The demo creates two USD balances and posts a synchronous 12.50 transfer in integer units. The example shows equal debits and credits; retrying with the same reference leaves balances unchanged.

Guide limitations

  • This is a local-only demo; its credentials and database defaults are for local use only.
  • Read the deployment guide before exposing a service.
