Practical overview
When it fits
Use the base model for text continuation or as a training foundation; choose an Instruct variant for chat and other instruction-based tasks. Follow the Llama 3 instruction template when using an Instruct model.
Who it is for
- Developers building Chinese-language text or instruction-following applications.
- Researchers and practitioners who want to fine-tune or evaluate Chinese LLMs.
- Users seeking model options for local inference on a personal computer.
Documented uses
- Generate text continuations from a prompt using the base model.
- Use an instruction-tuned model for Chinese question answering, writing, chat, and interaction.
- Continue pretraining or fine-tune models with the provided scripts and instruction data.
- Quantize and deploy a model locally following the project's tutorials.
Requirements & limits
The project is publicly available on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license.
- The project offers both a base model and instruction-tuned variants; interactive tasks call for an Instruct version.
- Instruct models require the Llama 3 instruction template, which differs from the Llama 2 chat template.
- The README recommends Instruct-v3 when there is no specific preference among versions.
- The repository lists Transformers, llama.cpp, text-generation-webui, vLLM, and Ollama as ecosystem options and provides local CPU/GPU quantization and deployment tutorials.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Choose a Chinese Llama 3 model for text generation or chat
Select a base or instruction-tuned model according to whether the task is text continuation or instruction-based interaction.
Before you start
- A task involving Chinese-language text generation, question answering, writing, or chat.
Steps
For text continuation, choose Llama-3-Chinese-8B, the base model.
For question answering, writing, chat, or other instruction-following tasks, choose a Llama-3-Chinese-8B-Instruct model; the project recommends v3 when there is no specific version preference.
When using an Instruct model, follow the Llama-3-Instruct template; the project notes that this template is incompatible with Llama-2-chat.
Expected outcome
A model variant and prompt-template choice matched to the documented task type.
Guide limitations
- The models support an 8K context length as listed in the model comparison.
- This guidance selects a model and template; it does not cover downloading, running, or deploying the model.
