Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a command-line workflow is appropriate for deriving and inspecting HD wallet addresses or key reports, especially when you need explicit control over paths, indexes, coin selection or output columns.
Who it is for
- Developers who need to inspect hierarchical deterministic wallet derivations from the command line.
- Wallet operators who need to derive address reports using a known preset or a specified BIP32 path.
- Users who need configurable output such as JSON, CSV, plaintext or HTML.
Documented uses
- Derive a sequence of addresses from an extended public or private key.
- Derive addresses from BIP39 mnemonic words, with an optional mnemonic password.
- Inspect derivation paths and key fields in a selectable report format.
- Use presets for common wallet paths, including Bitcoin Core-style derivation.
Requirements & limits
The project is distributed as a public GitHub repository under the GPL-3.0 license.
- The tool is a CLI rather than a hosted wallet interface.
- PHP 8 or newer is required according to the README; its installation example uses PHP extensions and Composer.
- Reports can contain private keys, so output handling and the sensitivity of supplied mnemonic or key material matter.
- The README documents Bitcoin SegWit formats, Bitcoin Cash address formats and Ethereum address types alongside broader altcoin support.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Hd Wallet Derive with PHP and Composer
Set up the command-line tool from its GitHub repository.
Before you start
- PHP 8 or newer, as specified in the README.
- The README's Ubuntu 16.04 package list includes php, php-gmp, php-mbstring and php-mcrypt.
- Git and Composer installation steps shown in the README.
Steps
Clone the repository and change into the hd-wallet-derive directory.
Download the Composer installer with the documented PHP command and run it.
Run php composer.phar install to install project dependencies.
Expected outcome
The repository and its Composer dependencies are set up for invoking the included CLI script.
Guide limitations
- The README's package example is for Ubuntu 16.04; it does not establish equivalent setup steps for other systems.
- The setup steps do not verify successful derivation or deployment.
Derive a report from an extended key
Use a supplied extended key to request a command-line derivation report.
Before you start
- The repository set up with PHP and Composer dependencies.
- An xpriv or xpub key to provide as input.
Steps
Invoke hd-wallet-derive.php with the required -g option and the --key option.
Set options such as --coin, --numderive, --startindex, --path and --addr-type as needed.
Choose report columns with --cols and an output format with --format; use --outfile to write output to a specified path.
Expected outcome
The tool is instructed to derive addresses and produce a report in the selected columns and format.
Guide limitations
- The README documents that default output columns include path, address and private key; users should account for sensitive key material in reports.
- Supported coin symbols and path details depend on the tool's listed options and presets.
