Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need a configurable Ethereum environment for development, testing or validation and can operate it through Kurtosis on Docker or Kubernetes.
Who it is for
- Ethereum client developers and teams testing or validating client behavior.
- Protocol and infrastructure teams setting up multi-client networks or PBS and MEV-Boost test environments.
Documented uses
- Provision a reproducible private Ethereum testnet or devnet.
- Configure and bootstrap a network with multiple Ethereum client options.
- Generate test traffic and observe network activity with transaction-spam and monitoring tools.
- Set up optional PBS relay infrastructure or inspect execution/consensus engine API traffic.
Requirements & limits
- The documented quickstart needs Docker and the Kurtosis CLI; Kubernetes is another supported runtime and has separate setup documentation.
- The package is explicitly not intended for production use.
- Cloud-hosted public-network deployments may require suitable persistent-storage speed and adjustments for state growth; larger volumes can affect cloud costs.
- Optional services and network behavior are configured with runtime flags or parameter files.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Start a default private Ethereum testnet with Docker
Use Kurtosis to start the package’s default private Ethereum testnet in a named enclave.
Before you start
- Docker installed with the Docker Daemon running
- Kurtosis CLI installed
Steps
Install Docker and start the Docker Daemon.
Install the Kurtosis CLI, or upgrade it to the latest version.
Run
kurtosis run --enclave my-testnet github.com/ethpandaops/ethereum-package.
Expected outcome
The package is run in the `my-testnet` enclave with default configuration; it provisions an Ethereum network and includes network utilities such as transaction spam and monitoring tools.
Guide limitations
- Designed for testing, validation, and client development; not intended for production use.
- The package supports Docker or Kubernetes, but this recipe covers Docker only.
