Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want an MCP-compatible client to interact with a running FreeCAD application, and can configure both its in-app addon and the separate MCP server.
Who it is for
- FreeCAD users who want an MCP-compatible assistant to work with CAD models and documents.
- Developers configuring MCP clients to access FreeCAD workflows.
Documented uses
- Create or edit a CAD model through an assistant.
- Run Python scripts within FreeCAD.
- Inspect an open FreeCAD document.
- Perform FEM analysis workflows from an MCP client.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an MIT license. The documented setup requires FreeCAD and uv or uvx; the Claude Desktop example requires its client configuration file.
- The integration has two parts: a FreeCAD addon and a separately launched MCP server.
- FreeCAD must remain open with its RPC server running for the documented client connection.
- The quick-start connection uses localhost by default.
- The repository documentation separates setup, configuration, tools, code execution and examples.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Connect Claude Desktop to FreeCAD
Set up the FreeCAD addon and configure Claude Desktop to launch the MCP server.
Before you start
- FreeCAD
- uv or uvx
- Claude Desktop
Steps
Clone the freecad-mcp repository and copy addon/FreeCADMCP into the FreeCAD addon directory.
Restart FreeCAD, select the MCP Addon workbench and start the RPC server from the FreeCAD MCP toolbar.
Add the documented freecad MCP server entry using the uvx command to claude_desktop_config.json.
Restart Claude Desktop and keep FreeCAD open with its RPC server running.
Expected outcome
Claude Desktop is configured to connect to the running FreeCAD RPC server; the documented default connection is through localhost.
Guide limitations
- The guide describes configuration and connection setup, not a guarantee that a particular model or analysis will succeed.
- The documented client configuration is for Claude Desktop.
