Practical overview
When it fits
Use Nimbus when you need to work with an Ethereum execution-layer client and are prepared to build it from source, particularly when resource-conscious design or constrained-device experimentation matters.
Who it is for
- Ethereum infrastructure developers exploring or building an execution-layer client.
- Developers investigating Ethereum client builds for resource-restricted devices.
- Android and Raspberry Pi developers willing to work with experimental build instructions.
Documented uses
- Build the Nimbus execution-client binary from source on a POSIX-compatible system.
- Start the client with the documented command to begin syncing with mainnet.
- Explore experimental compilation and launch workflows for Android or Raspberry Pi.
- Review the repository's separate Portal client and verified-proxy components.
Requirements & limits
The project is presented as a public repository and identifies itself as open source. Its README displays Apache 2.0 and MIT license badges.
- Nimbus handles the Ethereum execution layer and is described as pairing with a separate consensus-layer client.
- The POSIX build requires GNU Make, Bash, POSIX utilities and Git 2.9.4 or newer.
- Android and Raspberry Pi workflows are explicitly marked experimental.
- The README also houses a Portal Network light client and Nimbus Verified Proxy, separate from the execution client.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build and start Nimbus on a POSIX-compatible system
Build the execution-client binary and start it using the documented mainnet command.
Before you start
- POSIX-compatible operating system
- GNU Make, Bash and usual POSIX utilities
- Git 2.9.4 or newer
Steps
Obtain the nimbus-eth1 repository using Git.
Run the command below; the first Make invocation updates Git submodules.
make -j4 nimbus_execution_clientRun
build/nimbus_execution_client --helpto view command-line options.Run
build/nimbus_execution_clientto start syncing with mainnet.
Expected outcome
A built Nimbus execution-client binary is started with the documented mainnet synchronization command.
Guide limitations
- The repository documentation does not establish that these steps were independently executed.
- Windows support is marked experimental; this guide covers POSIX-compatible systems.
Set up an experimental Android build environment
Prepare Nimbus and run its execution-client build and launch commands in an Android PRoot environment.
Before you start
- Android device
- Termux installed from F-Droid or Google Play
- A PRoot environment; Ubuntu PRoot is noted as containing Nimbus prerequisites for Arm64
- Git, Make and GCC installed in the PRoot
Steps
Install Termux and a PRoot distribution, following that distribution's instructions.
In an Ubuntu PRoot, install prerequisites with
apt install git make gcc.Clone the repository, enter its directory and run the command below.
make updateRun the command below, then
build/nimbus_execution_client.make nimbus_execution_client
Expected outcome
The documented commands build and launch Nimbus within the Android PRoot environment.
Guide limitations
- Android compilation and execution are marked experimental.
- Other PRoot distributions may require additional work to supply prerequisites.
