Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when useful findings need to remain available across conversations or projects and you want the resulting knowledge stored as linked Markdown that you can inspect in Obsidian or directly as files.

Who it is for

  • People using AI agents who want knowledge to persist between sessions.
  • Researchers and developers who want to organize agent discoveries as inspectable Markdown files.
  • Users of Obsidian seeking an agent-assisted, linked knowledge base.

Documented uses

  • Capture reusable information from conversations, documents and project work.
  • Connect new findings to existing wiki pages and maintain links across the knowledge graph.
  • Query stored knowledge or produce cited topic briefings.
  • Find prior agent sessions and keep the vault organized.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. Setup instructions document pip, uv and pipx installation, and a Claude Code plugin option.

  • Knowledge is stored as Markdown files on disk, which the project describes as readable, greppable and diffable.
  • The Python memory interface is described as requiring no API key, embedding model, vector store or network connection.
  • Agent skills are Markdown files; the Claude Code plugin ships skills only, not the CLI or session hooks.
  • The project provides a CLI, Python API, agent skills, maintenance workflows and graph exports, so users can choose among several documented interaction paths.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install the CLI and initialize a vault

Install Obsidian Wiki and set up a named vault directory with the CLI.

Before you start

  • Python package installation using pip, uv or pipx.
  • A local directory to use as the vault.

Steps

  1. Install with the command below, the command below, or pipx install obsidian-wiki.

    Documented command
    pip install obsidian-wiki
    Documented command
    uv tool install obsidian-wiki
  2. Run obsidian-wiki setup --vault ~/brain, substituting the intended vault path.

Expected outcome

The CLI initializes the vault; the README says setup also registers two session hooks unless `--no-hooks` is used.

Guide limitations

  • This covers installation and setup only; it does not demonstrate an ingestion or query run.
  • The Claude Code plugin is a separate route and does not include the CLI or session hooks.
