Practical overview
When it fits
Use Mcporter when an MCP server's tools need to be accessed through a terminal, TypeScript process, script, or generated CLI, especially when the same tools must be available to an agent or another program.
Who it is for
- Developers building TypeScript applications that call MCP tools.
- People who want to discover or invoke MCP server tools from a terminal.
- Teams connecting MCP tools to scripts, generated command-line utilities, or coding-agent workflows.
Documented uses
- List the tools exposed by an MCP server and inspect their signatures.
- Call MCP tools or read server resources from the CLI.
- Define servers in TypeScript and reuse connections across calls.
- Generate a focused CLI or TypeScript types and clients from MCP tools.
- Record and replay an MCP session.
Requirements & limits
The project is open source under the MIT license. The README requires Node 24 or newer for npm installs and documents npx for trying the CLI without installing it.
- The README documents stdio, Streamable HTTP, and legacy SSE connections.
- Mcporter can read project and user configuration and import MCP server definitions from several coding tools.
- Configuration supports OAuth settings and environment placeholders; the
${env:VAR}placeholder form used by some MCP clients is explicitly unsupported. - A public Context7 example requires no local configuration or credentials, but this does not establish access requirements for other MCP servers.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Inspect and call a public MCP server
List the tools exposed by the documented public Context7 MCP server, then call its library-ID lookup tool.
Before you start
- Access to the Mcporter CLI through npx.
- A connection to the public Context7 MCP server shown in the README.
Steps
Run the command below to display the server's TypeScript-style tool signatures.
npx mcporter list https://mcp.context7.com/mcp --briefRun the command below.
npx mcporter call https://mcp.context7.com/mcp.resolve-library-id query="React hooks docs" libraryName=react
Expected outcome
The first command displays available tool signatures; the second returns matching Context7 library IDs.
Guide limitations
- The no-configuration, no-credentials example applies to this public Context7 server; other servers may require configuration or authentication.
