Practical overview
When it fits
Use Equibles when an AI assistant needs a self-hosted MCP connection to financial datasets, or when evaluating whether the hosted Equibles Cloud adds data types you need.
Who it is for
- Developers connecting AI assistants to financial datasets through MCP.
- Researchers building agent workflows around filings, holdings, trades or market indicators.
- Teams willing to operate a Docker-based data collection and serving stack.
Documented uses
- Retrieve and search SEC filings and query parsed financial statements.
- Query institutional holdings and disclosed insider or congressional trades.
- Access economic indicators, futures positioning, market indicators and daily prices through an AI assistant.
Requirements & limits
The open-source repository documents a self-hosted Docker setup. Equibles Cloud is described separately as a hosted offering.
- The project is an MCP data server and collection stack, rather than a standalone assistant or financial-analysis interface.
- The self-hosted core and Equibles Cloud have different documented data coverage; features such as earnings-call transcripts, live quotes and options chains are listed for Cloud.
- SEC contact information is required for SEC EDGAR access; FINRA and FRED credentials are needed for their respective optional data collectors.
- The repository identifies the project as open source under AGPL-3.0.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Equibles with Docker Compose
Prepare the self-hosted services and configure the SEC contact email required for SEC EDGAR access.
Before you start
- Docker
- A SEC contact email
Steps
Clone the Equibles repository and change into its directory.
Copy
.env.exampleto.env.Set
SEC_CONTACT_EMAILin.env.Run the command below.
docker compose up
Expected outcome
The documented Compose setup starts the database, web portal, MCP server and data-collection workers.
Guide limitations
- FINRA short-data collection requires FINRA API credentials; without them, that scraper skips.
- FRED economic-data collection requires a FRED API key; without it, that scraper skips.
