Practical overview
When it fits
Use Modal when an AI application needs cloud compute for inference or fine-tuning, particularly when workloads need to scale or use OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
Who it is for
- Teams hosting AI model inference endpoints.
- Developers running batch or real-time inference workloads.
- Teams fine-tuning large language models with managed cloud compute.
- Builders who want to run AI applications without managing underlying container infrastructure.
Documented uses
- Host scalable language or other AI model inference endpoints.
- Run batch or real-time model inference.
- Fine-tune large language models using cloud compute.
- Build AI applications without managing container infrastructure.
Requirements & limits
Modal is a paid service; its pricing page says customers pay for the compute they use.
- The service is infrastructure for AI workloads, not a standalone AI application.
- Compute use is the basis of pricing.
- OpenAI-compatible endpoints are supported for inference.
- The service is cloud-based and handles underlying container infrastructure.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Modal for Python development
Install and authenticate the Modal Python package so you can begin running jobs.
Before you start
- A Modal account
- Python and pip
- A valid payment method on file if using a GPU
Steps
Create an account at modal.com.
Install the package with the command below.
pip install modalAuthenticate by running
modal setup; if that does not work, try the command below.python -m modal setup
Expected outcome
The Modal package is installed and authenticated, ready for job development.
Guide limitations
- This setup recipe does not configure or run a specific workload.
- Using a GPU requires a valid payment method on file.
Compare options for Model inference and serving
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modal | Host scalable language or other AI model inference endpoints. | Cloud | Modal is a paid service; its pricing page says customers pay for the compute they use. |
| Morphingdb | Import a libtorch model and create predictions from values in a PostgreSQL table. | Docker, Linux, Self-hosted, Server | The README documents a Docker image and a build-from-repository option, followed by connecting to PostgreSQL and enabling the pgdl extension. |
| Gateway — pyadav | Send chat-completion requests to a provider through a common server endpoint. | Server | The repository is public and identifies the project as Apache-2.0 licensed. README installation instructions include binaries, platform package managers and Docker. |
