Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when beginning a Solana application from a template rather than creating the initial project structure manually.
Who it is for
- Developers starting a Solana dApp from an existing template.
- Teams or template authors who want to distribute reusable project starters.
Documented uses
- Generate a starter project from an official template.
- Create a project from an external template repository.
- Configure template initialization instructions, replacements, version checks and options.
Requirements & limits
The documented CLI invocation methods are npm, pnpm, bun and yarn. The project repository specifies an MIT license.
- The selected template determines the generated project and its further setup steps.
- External templates are supported through the --template or -t flag.
- Template-defined scripts run before dependency installation and must not prompt interactively.
- A template script returning a non-zero exit aborts generation and removes the target directory.
- The documented yarn command supports only the latest tag.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Generate a project from an external template
Initialize a project using a template repository supported by the CLI.
Before you start
- A command-line environment with npm, pnpm or yarn.
- A template repository identified by its GitHub organization and repository.
Steps
Run the CLI through npm, pnpm or yarn and provide the template with the --template or -t flag.
Follow any instructions returned by the template after initialization.
Expected outcome
A project is generated from the selected external template, with any template-provided instructions returned to the user.
Guide limitations
- The README says the yarn command supports only the latest tag.
- Template contents and subsequent setup requirements depend on the selected template.
