Practical overview

When it fits

Use Typhonjs when implementing Cardano wallet operations in JavaScript and you need library-level address or transaction functionality rather than a standalone wallet app.

Who it is for

  • Developers building Cardano wallet functionality into Node.js or browser software.
  • Teams integrating address handling, transaction preparation, signing, staking, governance, or token operations.

Documented uses

  • Parse bech32 or Byron Cardano addresses and create payment or reward addresses.
  • Construct payment transactions from UTxOs and calculate fees and change.
  • Prepare transactions for signing, add required witnesses, and build a signed CBOR-hex payload.
  • Mint or burn tokens, attach metadata, and work with Plutus script funds.
  • Implement documented staking, reward withdrawal, delegation, voting, or governance proposal operations.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies the project as open source under the Apache-2.0 license. Version 4 requires Node.js 22.12 or later and uses ESM.

  • Version 4 is ESM-only and has breaking changes from version 3, including bigint amounts and Uint8Array output.
  • Transaction construction requires current protocol parameters and appropriate UTxOs.
  • Signing requires access to keys corresponding to the required witnesses.
  • The documented signed payload is ready for submission, but network submission is not covered in the described workflow.
  • The README documents both Node.js and browser use without Node.js polyfills.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Prepare and sign a Cardano payment transaction

Build a payment transaction from supplied UTxOs, add required signatures, and produce its CBOR-hex payload.

Before you start

  • Typhonjs v4, which requires Node.js 22.12 or later and is ESM-only.
  • Current Cardano protocol parameters, including required fee and deposit values.
  • The receiver and change addresses, and the UTxOs to spend.
  • Private keys corresponding to the transaction's required witnesses.

Steps

  1. Create a Transaction with the protocol parameters and call paymentTransaction with the UTxOs, payment output, change address, and TTL.

  2. Read getRequiredWitnesses() and sign the transaction hash with the corresponding keys, adding each witness.

  3. Call buildTransaction() to obtain the signed transaction payload as CBOR hex.

Expected outcome

A signed transaction payload in CBOR hex, ready for submission.

Guide limitations

  • The documented workflow prepares and signs the transaction; it does not describe submitting it to the Cardano network.
  • Amounts are bigint lovelace, and transaction preparation depends on current protocol parameters.
  • Key derivation and transaction submission are outside the described workflow.
