Maka

Maka is an open-source agent workspace with desktop and terminal interfaces for executing tasks through a model and tools. Its Runtime Host records model messages, tool calls, permission decisions and termination as append-only events, which support the interface, later prompts and crash recovery.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Maka when you want an agent workspace that records task activity rather than relying only on a transient interface, or when you need desktop and terminal entry points to a shared runtime.

Who it is for

  • People who want to run model-assisted tasks from a desktop or terminal workspace.
  • Developers who want to inspect per-task execution histories.
  • Teams or evaluators comparing agent harness runs through published per-task benchmark results.

Documented uses

  • Execute an agent task using a configured cloud API, local model or compatible gateway.
  • Review the sequence of model messages, tool calls and permission decisions from a run.
  • Use the development CLI to run a task, including graph-mode tasks split into slices.
  • Examine per-task results included with benchmark reports.

Requirements & limits

The repository lists an Apache-2.0 license. Maka has not made an Apache release; development builds are not approved Apache releases. The repository identifies macOS and labels Windows and Linux as previews.

  • Maka does not bundle a shared model account; users configure and select a model connection before starting tasks.
  • Sessions, settings and run records stay local, while the model can be local or accessed through a cloud API or compatible gateway.
  • Source builds require Node.js 22.19 or newer, npm, Git and ripgrep.
  • Graph implementation operators use isolated Git worktrees and require the source project to be a clean Git worktree.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Build and start Maka Desktop from source

Start the Desktop development environment from a source checkout.

Before you start

  • Node.js 22.19 or newer
  • npm
  • Git
  • ripgrep

Steps

  1. Clone the Maka repository and change into its directory.

  2. Install dependencies with npm ci.

  3. Start the Desktop development environment with npm run dev.

Expected outcome

The Desktop development environment starts with hot module replacement.

Guide limitations

  • This is a development build, not an approved Apache release.
  • A model connection must be configured before starting a task.
Source-based practical guide

Run a task with the development CLI

Build the workspaces and invoke a task through the repository CLI.

Before you start

  • Node.js 22.19 or newer
  • npm
  • Git
  • ripgrep

Steps

  1. Build the workspaces with npm run build.

  2. Run a task using npm run cli:dev -- run followed by the task prompt.

Expected outcome

The development CLI starts a task using the configured Maka Dev profile.

Guide limitations

  • The repository CLI uses the Maka Dev profile, which is not automatically copied or synchronized with the released Maka profile.
  • A configured model connection is needed to start a task.
