Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an AI application needs a monitoring and analysis layer for request routing, debugging or usage review.
Who it is for
Teams building AI applications that need to monitor usage or investigate application behavior.
Documented uses
- Monitor AI application usage.
- Route AI application requests.
- Debug AI application behavior.
- Analyze application performance and usage.
Requirements & limits
The homepage advertises a free trial without a credit card.
- The service is described as covering routing, debugging and usage analysis.
- The available information does not specify technical implementation details or API access.
- A free trial is advertised without a credit card; this does not establish that the full service is free.

Send OpenAI JavaScript requests through Helicone
Configure the documented OpenAI JavaScript integration to route a chat-completion request through Helicone.
Before you start
- Node.js project using the OpenAI JavaScript library; the page shows examples for OpenAI v1 and v4+.
- Helicone and OpenAI API keys available as HELICONE_API_KEY and OPENAI_API_KEY environment variables.
Steps
Set HELICONE_API_KEY and OPENAI_API_KEY in the environment.
For OpenAI v4+, create an OpenAI client with OPENAI_API_KEY, baseURL https://oai.helicone.ai/v1, and the Helicone-Auth header set to Bearer ${HELICONE_API_KEY}.
Call chat.completions.create with a model and messages, then log the response.
Expected outcome
The documented JavaScript example sends a chat-completion request through Helicone and logs its response.
Guide limitations
- This integration is maintained but no longer actively developed; the documentation recommends the AI Gateway for the best experience and latest features.
- The page shows separate client setup examples for OpenAI v1 and v4+, so client configuration depends on the installed OpenAI library version.
