Practical overview
When it fits
Use Purrcat when you want a configurable, locally deployed personal agent and are prepared to work with a source-based setup and its technical prerequisites.
Who it is for
- Developers who want to build and customize a personal AI agent from source.
- Technically confident users who want to configure agent workflows, tools, skills or sensors.
Documented uses
- Set up a source-based local personal agent.
- Define multi-stage agent workflows with task-specific tools, conditional routing and human intervention.
- Maintain short-term and structured long-term memory across agent sessions.
- Extend the agent with MCP servers, community skills and sensors.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies the MIT license. The README describes a Windows release installer; it recommends source deployment on macOS and Linux because installers for those platforms have not yet been tested.
- The documented source installer sets up Git, uv, Node.js 18 or later, Docker and an embedding model.
- Docker Desktop on Windows requires a manual first launch to accept its agreement.
- The framework describes a broad extension surface, including MCP servers, skills, sensors and visual DAG editing.
- The README says the project is under rapid development and recommends source deployment to follow updates.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Purrcat from source
Set up the source-based Purrcat installation and register its command-line entry point.
Before you start
- A macOS, Linux or Windows environment with internet access.
- The installer sets up Git, uv, Node.js 18 or later, Docker and an embedding model.
- On Windows, Docker Desktop must be launched once to accept its agreement.
Steps
On macOS or Linux, run the documented install script with the shell command shown in the README.
On Windows, run the documented PowerShell install command instead.
Allow the script to clone the source to ~/purrcat, set up dependencies and register the global purrcat command.
Expected outcome
The source-based setup registers the purrcat command; the README lists purrcat desktop start as the command to launch the desktop app.
Guide limitations
- The project recommends source deployment; the README says macOS and Linux installers have not yet been tested.
- This guide covers installation, not a verified app launch or agent workflow.
