Practical overview
When it fits
Use Btcticker when you have a Raspberry Pi and compatible Waveshare e-paper display and want a configurable desk display for cryptocurrency prices.
Who it is for
- Raspberry Pi users who want a dedicated, always-visible display for selected cryptocurrency prices.
- People comfortable installing Linux packages, configuring SPI and editing a YAML file.
- Tinkerers who want a display that can cycle through multiple coins and fiat currencies.
Documented uses
- Display selected cryptocurrency prices and refresh them periodically.
- Choose the coins, fiat currencies and exchange used for price information.
- Configure cycling, screen orientation, inversion, locale and additional display information such as volume or ranking.
Requirements & limits
The project is publicly available on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. Its README says it relies on CoinGecko’s free API.
- The documented hardware is a Raspberry Pi and Waveshare 2.7-inch monochrome e-paper display; the script defaults to display V1.
- The setup requires an internet connection, SPI enabled on the Pi and a Python virtual environment.
- Price refresh defaults to every 300 seconds, with a documented minimum of 60 seconds.
- Board-button input is supported, but e-paper response to a button press can take a few seconds.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Btcticker on a Raspberry Pi
Prepare the documented software and configuration for a Raspberry Pi connected to a Waveshare 2.7-inch monochrome e-paper display.
Before you start
- A Raspberry Pi connected to the internet and running Raspberry Pi OS.
- A Waveshare 2.7-inch monochrome e-paper display; the script is set up for V1, with a code note for switching to V2.
- For an original Pi Zero or Zero W, 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS Lite; Lite is also recommended for Zero 2 W.
Steps
Install the documented system packages, including git, python3-venv and the listed Python libraries, then enable SPI with raspi-config.
Clone the Waveshare e-Paper library and Btcticker repositories, copy config_example.yaml to config.yaml, and copy the Waveshare Python library into the Btcticker directory.
Create a virtual environment with system site packages and install the requirements using .venv/bin/pip install -r requirements.txt.
Edit config.yaml to choose currencies, exchange, display options and refresh frequency.
Expected outcome
The repository and Python environment are prepared, with a configuration file for the ticker; the README gives a separate command for manual launch.
Guide limitations
- This setup recipe covers preparation and configuration, not confirmation that the display operates successfully.
- Internet access is assumed; CoinGecko provides the price data.
- The default refresh interval is 300 seconds and the documented lower limit is 60 seconds.
