Rag

Rag is a Python Streamlit application backed by txtai that retrieves context from vector indexes or graph paths before supplying it to a language model. It lets users add files, URLs or text to an index, run vector or graph-oriented queries, and inspect graph structures associated with Graph RAG responses. The repository is licensed under Apache-2.0.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Rag when you need a developer-oriented starting point for retrieval-grounded LLM experiments and want to examine both vector search and graph traversal as context-building methods.

Who it is for

  • Developers building retrieval-augmented generation prototypes
  • Teams exploring question-answering over their own documents or notes
  • Researchers comparing vector retrieval with graph path traversal

Documented uses

  • Ground LLM responses in retrieved documents or indexed text
  • Add files, URLs and custom notes to a retrieval index
  • Explore relationships between concepts through graph-based context
  • Compare vector RAG and Graph RAG in a Streamlit interface
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies an Apache-2.0 license. The documented setup paths are Docker or a Python virtual environment.

  • Choose vector RAG when relevant matches from an embeddings index are sufficient for the context.
  • Choose Graph RAG when relationships between concepts and traversed paths should shape the context.
  • The application uses txtai for its retrieval-backed RAG workflow.
  • The default configuration includes paths for a language model and an embeddings database, both of which can be changed through environment variables.
  • Graph RAG responses include a corresponding graph whose nodes represent sections labelled during upload.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Rag with a Python virtual environment

Install the application dependencies and start its Streamlit interface.

Before you start

  • Python environment
  • The Rag repository
  • The repository's requirements file

Steps

  1. Install the dependencies with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install -r requirements.txt
  2. Start the application with streamlit run rag.py.

  3. Use the running interface to explore the documented vector and graph RAG workflows.

Expected outcome

The Rag Streamlit application starts for interactive exploration.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe covers installation and startup; it does not document deployment or a successful query execution.
  • The project also documents Docker as an alternative setup route.
