Practical overview
When it fits
Use Bitpay App when you need a public TypeScript and React Native starting point for mobile wallet development and need documented iOS, Android, debugging, Storybook and deep-link workflows.
Who it is for
- Mobile developers building or studying a Bitcoin and cryptocurrency wallet
- Teams looking for an MIT-licensed wallet codebase for iOS and Android
- Developers prototyping wallet interfaces with React Native and Storybook
Documented uses
- Develop a mobile wallet application for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies
- Build the project for iOS and Android simulators or devices
- Configure and test mobile deep-link routes
- Debug Redux state through React Native Debugger
- Develop wallet interfaces in Storybook mode
Requirements & limits
- The repository is public and uses the MIT license.
- The implementation is TypeScript-based and targets iOS and Android through a mobile React Native project.
- The README documents separate platform setup and build workflows.
- Android local-server requests require certificate placement and network-security configuration.
- Deep-link customization requires coordinated changes in shared, iOS and Android configuration files.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the Bitpay App development project
Prepare the repository for documented iOS or Android development.
Before you start
- A local checkout of https://github.com/bitpay/bitpay-app
- Yarn >= 14.15.0
- For iOS, CocoaPods and an iOS development environment
- For Android local-server requests, a local BitPay server certificate and Android network-security configuration
Steps
Install dependencies with Yarn.
For iOS, run the documented CocoaPods installation from the ios directory.
Start the development server with the documented yarn start command.
Build for the selected iOS or Android simulator or device using the platform-specific command in the README.
For Android requests to a local server, place the certificate in android/app/src/main/res/raw and update network_security_config.xml with the local IP and trust anchor.
Expected outcome
The repository is configured for the documented mobile development workflow, with an Android local-server certificate path available when required.
Guide limitations
- The evidence documents setup and build commands but does not establish a successful build, production deployment or store-release compatibility.
- The local-server certificate procedure is described for Android.
Configure a custom mobile deep-link scheme
Replace the documented Bitpay deep-link prefix with a custom application scheme.
Before you start
- A local checkout of https://github.com/bitpay/bitpay-app
- A chosen custom scheme such as myapp://
Steps
Change APP_DEEPLINK_PREFIX in src/constants/config.ts to the chosen scheme.
On iOS, update CFBundleURLSchemes in ios/BitPayApp/info.plist without the colon and slashes.
On Android, update the scheme in the intent-filter data element in android/app/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml.
Expected outcome
The source and platform configuration files contain the selected custom deep-link scheme.
Guide limitations
- Status: Verified. The README documents the configuration changes, but does not establish production deployment or store-release compatibility.
- The evidence does not document an end-to-end production deep-link test.
Compare options for Wallet connections
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitpay App | Develop a mobile wallet application for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies | Android, iOS, Mobile | |
| Shango | Connect a mobile wallet to a personal LND node. | Android, iOS, Mobile | The README lists iOS TestFlight and Google Play beta installation routes and describes the app as a public beta. Its cloud-node instructions are for testnet. |
| Walletconnect Expo Example | Study or prototype a wallet connection and authentication screen in a React Native dapp. | Android, iOS |
