Practical overview

When it fits

Use AgentScope Java when an agent application needs Java-based building blocks for long-running execution, tool-use controls, event-driven interfaces, subagents or distributed session handling.

Who it is for

  • Java developers building agent-powered applications or services.
  • Teams that need long-running agents with controlled tool calls and human review.
  • Developers designing multi-agent or distributed deployments.

Documented uses

  • Build an agent application using Java execution and reasoning/tool abstractions.
  • Stream typed events for frontend rendering or human-in-the-loop interaction.
  • Gate tool calls by allowing them, requiring user approval or denying them.
  • Coordinate subagents and forward their events.
  • Persist sessions and memory across replicas in a distributed deployment.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • Requires JDK 17 or higher; the documented installation uses Maven.
  • Model providers are added through separate extension modules; documented choices include DashScope, OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and Ollama.
  • The quickstart's DashScope example requires DASHSCOPE_API_KEY.
  • Workspace tool execution options named in the project documentation include local, Docker, Kubernetes and AgentRun cloud sandbox.
  • The production deployment documentation names Redis, MySQL, PostgreSQL, OSS and COS for distributed session and memory management.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Add AgentScope and a model provider with Maven

Set up the documented AgentScope Harness dependency and a model-provider extension in a Java project.

Before you start

  • JDK 17 or higher
  • A Maven project
  • A model provider choice; the example uses DashScope

Steps

  1. Add the io.agentscope:agentscope-harness:2.0.3 dependency to the Maven project.

  2. Add the matching model extension dependency; the documented DashScope example is io.agentscope:agentscope-extensions-model-dashscope:2.0.3.

  3. For the DashScope example, set DASHSCOPE_API_KEY before running the application.

Expected outcome

The project has the documented Harness and model-provider dependencies needed to proceed with the Java quickstart.

Guide limitations

  • This covers dependency and key setup; it does not describe the complete application implementation or deployment.
COMPARE OPTIONS
